The Best Korean BBQ Spots in Incheon, South Korea
Barbecued meat has been an integral part of Korean cuisine for thousands of years, although it is only now gaining popularity around the world. From traditional galbi (ribs) and samgyeopsal (pork belly) to more modern dishes that incorporate Western cooking techniques, Incheon’s restaurants serve up a variety of beautifully marinated and grilled meats. Here are some of the best the city has to offer.
Byeokje Galbi
Opened in 1986, this hanwoo (Korean native cattle) specialty restaurant uses high-quality domestic beef from Pocheon and has a diverse range of side dishes. While the prices are a bit steep, they have the best cuts and are known for their quality service. So much so that this local favorite has been listed on the Wall Street Journal’s ‘Asia’s Best 5 Restaurants’ list – three times!
Buam Galbi
Don’t let Buam Galbi’s standard interior with its round metal tables and fire pits fool you. This traditional restaurant knows a thing or two about good BBQ. Popular with locals, tourists and even celebrities, Buam Galbi serves up a nice selection of succulent pork belly and hanwoo that you can grill at your table to your liking. At around ₩14,000 won ($12 USD) per person, the food here is not only delicious, but affordable, too.
Pool House BBQ
Operated during the summer and on special holidays, the Pool House at the Grand Hyatt Hotel offers alfresco dining on a terrace by the pool. The menu features both Western and Korean-style premium grill items such as juicy lamb chops, giant king prawns and other fresh seafood. Pair your meal with one of Pool House’s wines, which are handpicked by the restaurant’s sommelier.
Danjizip
For something a bit more unique, Danjizip offers traditional Korean BBQ dishes with a twist. Their herb-marinated meat is incredibly delicious, while various flavored and colored salts allow diners to create interesting taste combinations by mixing and matching. With a cozy and spacious interior, as well as an energetic and friendly staff, Danjizip is consistently packed with hungry youngsters eager to fill their bellies and their Instagram feeds. As a bonus, English menus are available, as is the option of ordering for one.
Mapo Sutbul Galbi
With a wide selection of pork, beef, chicken and seafood, Mapo Sutbul Galbi has something to please just about every palate. Their galbi, however, is the real star here and is prepared with a special plum marinade that differentiates it from other restaurants. Their meat is especially tender and is served in generous portions, ensuring diners are satisfied by the end of their meal. Enhancing the dining experience is the kimchi egg stew that is cooked on the side of the grill.
Korean Sutbul Dak Barbecue
Sutbul dakgalbi – spicy charcoal grilled chicken – is believed to have originated in the late 1960s in small makgeolli taverns in Chuncheon as an inexpensive snack to be eaten while drinking. It has since transformed into one of the country’s most beloved dishes and there’s no better place to try it than Korean Sutbul Dak Barbecue. Can’t stand the heat? Then opt for a portion or two of samgyeopsal, which is equally delicious.
